Connecting to Probestyx

This guide shows you how to create probes in the Logstyx dashboard that connect to Probestyx agents.

What is Probestyx?

Probestyx is a lightweight metrics collection agent that you install on your servers. It collects system metrics (CPU, RAM, disk, network) and exposes them at an HTTP endpoint.

Installing Probestyx

This guide assumes you already have Probestyx installed and running. See the Probestyx documentation for installation instructions.

Creating a Probestyx Probe

Navigate to Probes → Click Add Probe.

Step 1: Basic Config

  • Title: Descriptive name (e.g., "Production Server Metrics")
  • Project: Select which project receives the metrics
  • Interval: 60 seconds (recommended)
  • Context (optional): Add server identification
    json
    {
      "server": "web-01",
      "environment": "production"
    }

Step 2: Setup Connection

URL

Enter your Probestyx endpoint URL:

http://your-server:9100/metrics

Examples:

  • http://192.168.1.100:9100/metrics
  • http://web-server.internal:9100/metrics

HTTP Method

Select GET

Timeout

Set to 10000 ms (10 seconds)

Authentication Type

Choose based on your Probestyx configuration:

If Probestyx requires authentication:

  1. Select Probestyx
  2. Enter the Probestyx Secret (the same secret configured in your Probestyx agent)

If Probestyx has no authentication:

  1. Select None

Step 3: Test and Create

  1. Click Test Connection
    • Success: "Connected successfully"
    • Failure: Check URL, network access, and secret
  2. Click Create to start collecting metrics

Viewing Metrics

After the probe executes:

  1. Go to your project's Logs tab
  2. Logs will contain metrics like:
    json
    {
      "cpu_usage_percent": 45.2,
      "ram_usage_percent": 67.8,
      "disk_usage_percent": 52.3,
      "network_bytes_sent_per_sec": 102400
    }

Troubleshooting

Test Connection Fails

  • Verify Probestyx is running: curl http://server:9100/health
  • Check network/firewall allows access to port 9100
  • Confirm URL and port are correct

Authentication Errors

  • Verify the secret matches your Probestyx configuration
  • Check for extra spaces in the secret field

No Metrics Appear

  • Wait for the first interval to pass
  • Check project's Logs tab for ERROR entries
  • Verify Probestyx is configured to collect metrics
