Login & Authentication

This guide covers how to access your Logstyx dashboard, manage your session, and handle authentication-related tasks.

Accessing the Login Page

After installing Logstyx, navigate to the login page:

Development:

http://localhost:5000/setup

Production:

https://logs.yourcompany.com/setup

Logging In

First-Time Login

Enter the credentials you want to use as the first Logstyx user:

  1. Navigate to /setup
  2. Enter your email address
  3. Enter your password
  4. Click Login

After successful authentication, you'll be redirected to the Projects dashboard (home page).

Subsequent Logins

Return to /login and use the same credentials.

Session Management

Active Sessions

Once logged in, your session remains active while you're using the dashboard. The session is maintained through secure cookies.

Session Expiration

If your session expires while you're on a protected page:

  1. The dashboard automatically detects the expired session
  2. You're redirected to /logout
  3. Your session is cleared
  4. You're returned to the login page
  5. Log in again to continue

This prevents unauthorized access if you step away from your computer.

Manual Logout

To end your session manually:

  1. Click Logout at the bottom of the left sidebar
  2. Your session is cleared immediately
  3. You're redirected to the login page

Security Best Practice

Always log out when:

  • Using a shared or public computer
  • Stepping away for extended periods
  • Finished with your work session

Troubleshooting Login Issues

Invalid Credentials

Problem: "Invalid email or password" error

Solutions:

  • Double-check your email address for typos
  • Verify your password (passwords are case-sensitive)
  • Contact your Logstyx administrator to reset your password

Cannot Access Login Page

Problem: Page won't load at all

Solutions:

  • Verify Logstyx services are running:
    bash
    docker compose ps
  • Check if the correct port is exposed (default: 5000)
  • Ensure your firewall allows connections to the port
  • Verify the domain/IP address is correct

Session Keeps Expiring

Problem: Getting logged out frequently

Possible Causes:

  • Browser blocking cookies (check browser settings)
  • Session timeout configured too short
  • Browser extensions interfering with cookies
  • Network issues causing connection drops

Solutions:

  • Enable cookies in your browser
  • Check browser console for errors (F12 → Console tab)
  • Try a different browser to isolate the issue
  • Contact your administrator about session timeout settings

Redirect Loop

Problem: Login redirects back to login repeatedly

Solutions:

  • Clear browser cookies and cache
  • Try using an incognito/private window
  • Check browser console for JavaScript errors
  • Verify Logstyx backend services are healthy

Password Security

Password Requirements

When creating or updating your password, follow these guidelines:

  • Use a strong, unique password
  • Avoid reusing passwords from other services
  • Consider using a password manager
  • Change default passwords after initial setup

Security Notice

Logstyx stores passwords securely using industry-standard hashing. However, you should still follow password best practices to protect your account.

Changing Your Password

Password changes are typically handled through user settings or by an administrator. If you forgot your password the only way to regain access it is to ask other user that have WRITE_USER access to recreate your account.

Best Practices

For Users

  1. Use strong passwords - Mix uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols
  2. Don't share credentials - Each team member should have their own account
  3. Log out when done - Especially on shared computers
  4. Keep credentials secure - Use a password manager
  5. Report issues immediately - Contact your admin if you suspect unauthorized access

For Administrators

  1. Regular access reviews - Remove inactive users periodically
  2. Monitor login activity - Watch for suspicious patterns
  3. Set appropriate permissions - Grant minimum necessary access
